Truth, Thoughts, and Emotions We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10.5) Perhaps you have heard its not how you feel but what you think that matters, because emotions are erratic. But that’s not quite true, our emotions are a by product of what we think. Usually a person will have a rational thought followed by an irrational thought that in turn leads to an irrational emotion. That is to say that emotions have there proper purpose. Without emotions we would never get depressed or feel happy and we would never feel anxious or scared, and thereof re would never act. Without fear we would not run from a wild bear, and without anxiety we would never leave bed or do our homework on time. Likewise, we feel sad when something is amiss like when a loved passes away, this is rational because these people were valuable and dear to us, they brought us happiness. Depression over losing a loved one becomes irrational when someone tells himself, “I will never be happy again.” Can he really say, “I will never be happy?” What evidence (truth) does such a person have that he will never be happy? After all he knows that people lose their loved ones all the time and although they feel sad and always miss that person, they do continue to enjoy life. Therefore it’s not the emotions that are illogical, but often the irrational thought that follows that produces the illogical emotions which in turn produce illogical behavior and the cycle starts over. For example, a person may say, “I have committed a horrible sin”. This may be a rational thought but what often follows on some level is therefore God will never forgive me,” (And we know from God’s word, the scriptures, that God forgives)[1]. And so this person continues the cycle same way again, and feeling the same way. Sometimes, such lies are from Satan and other times they are our own faulty beliefs and attitudes[2]. Regardless, if we know the truth, then we can be set free from irrational thoughts and irrational emotions. For Jesus said, “you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free[3]” Just like knowing the truth about trivial things helps us engage in rational thinking and feeling, so through knowing the word, and the truth of the Good News, we transform our attitudes and thoughts to be the same as the mind of Christ. And we are not alone for we have the Holy Spirit who will lead us into all truth[4]. Because the Spirit lives in us, we are recreated to be like Christ.[5] Therefore, let us continue to focus on God’s words and God’s truths so that we can examine our own thoughts develop new attitudes in our minds, and speak edifying words from the heart[6].
