The Church is a Building

The next time someone asks, “Is the church a building?”  You can say, “yes.”  Often in the New Testament, we read how Christ is the foundation of the Church.  For example in Matthew 16:15-18, we find Christ testing his disciples by asking, “Who do you say that I am?”  And Peter responds, “You are the Christ, he Son of the Living God.”  At which point Christ answers, “Upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”  In Ephesians 2:19-21, Paul writes that we are “members of God’s household”.  Christ is the chief cornerstone, and in Him the “whole building is joined together and rises to become the holy temple of the Lord”.  For example, in 1 Peter 2:5, we find that we are living stones, that are being built into a spiritual house.  In 1 Timothy 3:15, we find that God’s household is the church.

So what can we conclude about this, I think the answers can be found in 1 Corinthians 3:5-15.  We are all builders, building upon the foundation of Jesus Christ.  We must be careful what we build, unless the rains come and wash it away.  And the rain will come, our work will be tested for what it is.  Verse 13 says that fire will test the quality of each man’s work, if what he builds survives he will receive his reward.  In
this passage we are reminded that we are mere men, “who is Paul…who is Apollos.”  Who is Billy Graham who am I, who are you?  We are only laborers.  One man waters and another man plants, but it is God who makes things grow.  So, “be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.  Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to one hope when you were called-- one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:2-5).
